Urinary Incontinence Q & A

What are the symptoms of urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence refers to the loss of bladder control. Your symptoms can vary depending on the severity of your condition and the type of incontinence you have. Some patients experience light leaking while others experience moderate urine loss.

The different types of incontinence include stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and overflow incontinence. Depending on which type you have, symptoms may include:

  • Leakage when coughing, sneezing, or laughing
  • Leakage caused by exercise or heavy lifting
  • Sudden urge to urinate
  • Sudden involuntary loss of urine
  • Increased nighttime urination
  • Inability to empty bladder
  • Dribbling after urination

Functional incontinence refers to an inability to properly urinate because of a physical or mental impairment like arthritis or Parkinson's. When a person suffers from multiple types of incontinence, it’s referred to as mixed incontinence.

What causes urinary incontinence?

A number of conditions and changes to the body can result in urinary incontinence, they include:

  • Changes due to vaginal birth
  • Pregnancy
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Kidney stones
  • Prostate cancer
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Menopause

Rather than a condition itself, urinary incontinence is a signal of an underlying issue. Incontinence can lead to skin rashes and impact your personal life and relationships.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

Treatment for urinary incontinence depends on the underlying condition. Before you begin treatment, Dr. Woods performs an in-depth evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms.

Diagnosis begins with a discussion of your symptoms and medical history and a physical exam. Dr. Woods then uses urodynamic studies to determine the exact cause of your condition.

These tests allow him to check for signs of infection and determine the status of your bladder functions. Once you’ve been diagnosed, treatment for your condition may include:

O-Shot®

The O-Shot is a safe and effective nonsurgical solution for women who experience stress incontinence. The O-Shot uses the healing properties of platelet-rich plasma to repair vaginal and urethral tissue, restoring strength and function.

Biofeedback therapy

Biofeedback therapy is a proven treatment used to train and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles gives you more control over your bladder and improves urinary functions. Biofeedback therapy uses specialized instruments to measure muscle activity and ensure the right muscles are being trained.

Collagen injections

Collagen injections are used to support weakened muscles around the urethra. To perform this procedure, Dr. Woods injects collagen into the tissue surrounding the urethra. This helps keep the urethra closed and prevent leaking.

If your condition is unresponsive to more conservative measures, Dr. Woods also offers surgical solutions to urinary incontinence, including slings, cystocele repair, and rectocele repair.
