What are the symptoms of cancer?

Many forms of cancer don’t show signs in the early stages. If you experience signs or symptoms, they may include:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain in the sides or stomach
  • Weight loss
  • Bone pain

Symptoms like bone pain and weight loss typically occur as your condition advances. Many of the symptoms of urologic cancer are similar to other conditions like kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

How is cancer diagnosed?

Proper treatment for your condition requires an accurate diagnosis. Depending on the stage and location of your condition, you might not need treatment right away.

Dr. Woods provides in-depth evaluations to help you determine the nature of your condition and the best option for managing and/or treating your condition.

To begin your diagnosis, you sit down with Dr. Woods to discuss your medical history as well as any concerning symptoms you or your primary doctor have noticed. Dr. Woods then performs a physical exam, checking for lumps and other abnormalities in your stomach, sides, and back.

He also performs a blood test and urine cytology to check for abnormal cells in the blood and urine. He may order additional tests to accurately confirm your condition. These include:

  • Cystoscopy
  • Endoscopy
  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • X-ray
  • Biopsy

An accurate diagnosis is the first step in addressing your condition. Once you’ve been diagnosed, you and Dr. Woods discuss your options for effective treatment.

How is cancer treated?

Treatment for urologic cancer depends on several factors, including the size and location of your tumor, your age, and overall health. Dr. Woods specializes in a number of conventional and innovative treatment methods. Treatment for your condition may include:

  • Active surveillance
  • Radioactive seeds
  • Hormonal treatment
  • High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
  • Cryotherapy
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy

Urologic cancer is easiest to treat in the early stages. Regular screenings can help you determine your risk for certain types of cancer. With the right treatment, cancer can be effectively destroyed and eliminated from the body.

After your recovery, Dr. Woods continues to monitor your health to watch for regrowth or any other complications.
